Chiropractic Examinations

In many regards, a chiropractic examination is very similar to standard examination procedures administered by all health care providers. With that said, how chiropractors examine the structure and function of the spine and then determine specific chiropractic treatments separates chiropractic care from other disciplines.

Diagnostic Imaging

If a patient requires x-rays, they can be performed on our premises. If the patient has had other forms of diagnostic imaging such as CT scans, MRIs or even laboratory tests done, we encourage him or her to bring in the reports.

Activator/Instrument Assisted Adjustment

Our activator/instrument assisted adjustment is an excellent alternative for patients who are not partial to hands-on chiropractic adjustments, or for patients whose medical needs are not suited to hands-on adjustments. The activator or instrument-assisted adjustor is a small tool that is used during an adjustment as a more indirect means of providing chiropractic treatment. This special instrument gently administers small pulses of pressure and force, designed to revitalize the functioning of your spine and return it to its normal level of mobility and comfort. The small, hand-held instrument used in activator or instrument assisted adjustments is spring-loaded, allowing it to apply the quick exertions of force necessary to encourage healing in the spine. Part of this method’s great efficiency is its quickness. Because it works so fast, there is little time for the spine to tense up in response, which can result in ineffective treatment. The activator/instrument-assisted adjustment method is used on specific parts of the spine in order to increase your daily comfort and prevent future complications. The hand-held instrument used makes it even easier for specific problem areas to be focused on quickly and effectively. Activator/instrument-assisted adjustments can be used as a treatment method for a whole host of common issues, including back pain, neck pain, and even headaches. It is one of the most highly recommended treatments used today, and many patients have seen significant relief as a result. Some patients prefer this method compared to the traditional, hands-on adjustment method, while others find hands-on to be more effective. The choice is yours!

Cox Flexion Distraction

Patients with pain in their neck, back, or legs can benefit from the Cox Flexion Distraction technique for safe and efficient pain relief. With this treatment, Dr. Oza aligns your spine, which relieves any pain you may be experiencing. Slow, precise, repetitive movements allow the discs in the lower back to expand. These motions are effective because they allow the discs a period of relief from constant pressure, which reduces inflammation and consequently restores optimal nerve function.

Spinal Traction

Spinal Traction, a gentle and safe chiropractic technique, targets the lumbar and cervical muscles to reintroduce kinetic activity. The Traction Unit then comfortably applies traction to the spinal joint, decompressing the disk and reducing pain. Unlike conventional traction that stretches the back only, this Traction procedure aids in reconstitution and disc healing, allowing increased circulation to the damaged area.

Physical Therapy Modalities

Moist heat packs (hydroculator packs): Moist heat packs are designed to increase circulation in the area they are applied. They can reduce pain, muscle tightness, and fluid build-up, as well as promote natural and effective healing.

Cryotherapy (ice therapy): Cryotherapy, or ice therapy, is one of the most common and effective pain relievers. It is proven to reduce nerve activity, which numbs pain and reduces swelling.

Ultrasound: produces high frequency sound waves which help relax the muscles, ligaments and tendons. It helps reduce the inflammation and swelling around the injured joints, which decreases the pain, thereby making it easier to adjust the bones. This in turn helps restore normal joint mobility and function.

TENS: Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, or TENS, is an instrument used by physical therapists and chiropractors for helping their patients with pain relief. A TENS pad is placed on the area of injury and creates a sensory level stimulation designed to reduce pain.

Phonophoresis: Phonophoresis is a process used in physical therapy in which an ultrasound is used to deliver drugs that are topically applied to the patient.

Iontophoresis: Iontophoresis is a process involving electrical stimulation to deliver medication through the skin.

High volt galvanic current: High volt galvanic current stimulation is a physical therapy modality used to heal wounds, to manage pain, and for other similar purposes.

Intersegmental traction: Intersegmental traction is a chiropractic technique used to increase the range of motion of the spine.

Cold Laser Therapy: Laser therapy or “photobiomodulation” is the use of specific wavelengths of light to create therapeutic effects. These therapeutic effects are created by photons or packets of light, which penetrate damaged cells. When this occurs, there is pain relief, a reduction of inflammation, and an accelerated tissue healing time.

Spinal and extremity exercises: Spinal and extremity exercises are specially designed and crafted by medical professionals to promote healing and increased mobility for areas affected by injury or specific medical conditions.

Diversified Spinal and Extremity Adjustments

Diversified spinal and extremity adjustments are among the most widely used forms of adjustment in chiropractic care. This hands-on technique helps create motion in spinal joints with the goal of restoring structure and function. Extremity adjustments are adjustments to joints that are not contained in the spine. These would include jaw, shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, finger, hip, knee, ankle and foot. Like the spine, these extremities develop joint dysfunction, where the joint develops reduced motion, abnormal muscle tone, inflammation, scar tissue or arthritic changes. Once restoration of motion has been returned to the extremity, there is often reduced pain, improved motion, relaxed muscles, reduced nerve interference and promotion of healing.

Sports Injuries

Chiropractic offers a balanced approach to the treatment and the healing of sports injuries. By using the chiropractic adjustment to return spinal segments to their normal mobility and by using physical therapy to help the supportive tissues (muscles, tendons, and ligaments), chiropractic physicians help the injured areas return to normal function. Combined with some rest to help the healing process, athletes will find their way back on the court. Afterward, better strategies for exercise and stretching will be discussed with the athlete to help him or her stay on the straight and narrow path to better enjoyment of his or her chosen sport.

Many professional athletes are utilizing chiropractic care more and more because they realize that it helps them maximize athletic performance. Articles continue to appear in major newspapers and magazines citing such stars as Arnold Schwartzeneger, former boxing champ Evander Holyfield, and football stars such as Emmit Smith and Joe Montana proclaiming the benefits that chiropractic has meant for their careers. More and more professional and college teams are utilizing care for that same reason.

Pregnancy and Pain

Before you become pregnant, your doctor of chiropractic can detect any imbalances in the pelvis or elsewhere in your body that could contribute to pregnancy discomfort or possible neuromusculoskeletal problems after childbirth.

Many pregnant women have found that chiropractic adjustments provide relief from the increased low-back pain brought on by pregnancy. Chiropractic manipulation is safe for the pregnant woman and her baby and can be especially attractive to those who are trying to avoid medications in treating their back pain. Doctors of chiropractic can also offer nutrition, ergonomic, and exercise advice to help a woman enjoy a healthy pregnancy.

Chiropractic care can also help after childbirth. In the eight weeks following labor and delivery, the ligaments that loosened during pregnancy begin to tighten up again. Ideally, joint problems brought on during pregnancy from improper lifting or reaching should be treated before the ligaments return to their pre-pregnancy state to prevent muscle tension, headaches, rib discomfort, and shoulder problems.

Motor Vehicle Accident Injuries

It is critical that chiropractic care is sought immediately after an automobile accident since allowing the effects of whiplash to go untreated can induce long-term pain. The seriousness of the physical effects of an accident is not always known or felt immediately following. It can take days, weeks or even months for major symptoms to show up, which is why chiropractic care is essential to maintaining the health of a spine that has been through a trauma.

Any body part that is jarred or thrown forward unexpectedly and beyond normal limits can sustain stretched ligaments and even tears. Those supporting the head and neck are especially vulnerable to this kind of tearing during a collision. Since chiropractors specialize in the care of bones, muscles, nerves and connective tissue, they are crucial to visit after an accident. All those major parts of the body are important to keep in optimal health and correct alignment so they can function properly and all body systems can operate seamlessly.

Personal Injuries (Slip and Fall)

Anyone who has suffered from a slip and fall injury ought to consider visiting a chiropractor for a remedy. Chiropractic care is a risk-free and natural way to deal with aches and pains in people who have encountered any injuries. Treatment is suited for neuromusculoskeletal injuries which involve the soft tissues such as nerves, muscles, ligaments and tendons. It is a non-invasive and drug-free method that is primarily based on the scientific principle where interference causes discomfort and limited performance.

A chiropractor performs treatment by adjusting the affected area to restore proper alignment of the bones or joints, thereby getting rid of the interference inside of the anxious muscles affected by the accident. When the interference is eliminated, the body is capable of mending itself. The body’s nerve signals are free of obstruction and begin to help start aiding in the therapeutic healing process. Chiropractic treatment can aid sufferers by allowing them to heal and avoid surgical process in the future. In time, a chiropractor can do a lot to assist you and get you on your feet again.
