The Facts

Is chiropractic treatment safe?

Chiropractic treatments are known to be some of the safest options when it comes to healing and pain management practices related to an array of conditions associated with the neuromusculoskeletal system. While it is generally agreed upon on as an incredibly safe treatment option, like all medical services there are certain risks involved and adverse side effects can occasionally occur. We like to keep our patients informed about the risks of each service that they choose at our practice, and always do everything in our power to ensure our patients’ safety and comfort during each visit. While risks do exist, they tend to be quite small—nearly insignificant. In fact, most patients feel relief from their symptoms soon after their treatment, if not immediately after. Usually, the worst side effects that patients have after chiropractic work is soreness or tenderness, as if they had just exercised, and these side effects tend to dissolve after a day or so.

One service in which safety is sometimes questioned is precise cervical manipulation, which is also commonly referred to as a neck adjustment. In the past, there have been reports of certain kinds of strokes as a result of a high-velocity neck manipulation, but recent studies in the field show that those kinds of results actually occur spontaneously, or after moving the neck a certain way by accident—perhaps while participating in a sport, or quickly turning the head while driving. In fact, it has been proven that precise cervical manipulation is actually remarkably safe.

In order to provide you with the safest and most effective treatment for your individual situation, our chiropractors make it a point to understand your symptoms as specifically as possible. Being as detailed as possible when discussing your pain with our experts can aid us in providing you with the safest, most helpful chiropractic care.

Another important safety consideration is understanding the risks associated with prescription and over-the-counter NSAIDS, as these medications are commonly used for the conditions and symptoms that our patients are experiencing. These medications increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding, which can lead to hospitalization and even death, and so you should always consult with a professional if you are unsure about your intake.

Spinal Manipulation for Low Back Pain

Many of the patients that visit Royal Chiropractic Clinic are seeking relief from low back pain, which can be one of the most difficult symptoms to treat. One of the most highly utilized methods for treating low back pain is spinal manipulation. Spinal manipulation has proven to relieve pain, and get the spine back to a more normal level of functionality.

About Low-Back Pain

Low back pain affects about 25% of American adults every year. In fact, most people are afflicted by serious back pain at some time in their lives—and often the cause of this pain remains unknown. Back pain, and low back pain in particular, can be difficult to analyze and treat because it is so different from patient to patient. Everyone experiences back pain different from each other. In some cases, patients only experience the pain for a few weeks or so, while for others it can be a chronic problem that lasts years.

Spinal Manipulation and Low-Back Pain

Spinal manipulation can also be referred to as spinal manipulative therapy. It is commonly used by our chiropractors to address low back pain in our patients. We can provide spinal manipulation either using a “hands-on” approach, in which the chiropractor actually uses his or her hands directly to manipulate the spine, or a special device designed to exert controlled pulses of force on specific areas of the spine can be used as an alternative. The amount of force used and the areas of the spine manipulated will vary depending on the individual patient’s symptoms and needs.

It is important to note that chiropractic services are based on the relationship between the physical body’s structure and the way it functions. It focuses on the spine’s structure and functioning in particular.
